The three most common ways to automate a trading strategy are a MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisor, a TradingView Pine Script and a Python bot connected to a broker API. Each one fits a different kind of trader.
MT5 Expert Advisor (EA)
An EA is a program written in MQL5 that runs inside MetaTrader 5 and can open, manage and close trades by itself.
- Best for: traders whose broker supports MT5 and who want a fully automated robot.
- Strengths: built-in strategy tester for backtesting, full trade management (trailing stops, partial exits), runs on a VPS around the clock.
- Limits: only works where your broker offers MT5.
TradingView Pine Script
Pine Script is TradingView's language for indicators and strategies.
- Best for: custom indicators, signals and alerts on charts you already use.
- Strengths: quick to build, easy to visualise, strategy tester on the chart, alerts to phone or webhook.
- Limits: Pine Script itself does not place orders at your broker. Execution needs a webhook bridge or manual action.
Python bot with a broker API
A Python program connects directly to your broker's API to read data and place orders.
- Best for: index and stock options, multi-leg strategies, scanners and custom dashboards.
- Strengths: the most flexible option: any logic, any data, logging, databases and dashboards.
- Limits: needs a server or VPS, careful error handling, and your broker's API access and approvals.
Quick comparison
- Want a chart indicator or alerts? Pine Script.
- Want a hands-off robot on an MT5 broker? MT5 EA.
- Trading NSE options or need full control? Python with a broker API.
Many traders combine them, for example a Pine Script indicator for analysis and a Python bot for execution. See our services for what we build.
